Colusa Girls Repeat as SVL Champs

The Colusa RedHawks paid tribute to their seniors on Feb. 14, then downed Winters 38-28 to claim their second straight SVL crown.

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Valentine’s Day was a little sweeter for the Colusa varsity girls basketball team, when after paying tribute to its eight seniors in their final regular season home game, the RedHawks went on to defeat the visiting Winters Warriors 38-28 and wrap up their second straight Sacramento Valley League championship.

A chippy affair throughout, Colusa could never quite shake the Warriors completely, but ultimately relied on its more polished game to earn the victory and extend its win streak to 12 straight.

Leading the way for the RedHawks was Peyton Miller, who after a strong second half, finished the night with a team-high 10 points, while McKenna Azbill and Danica Chavez tossed in nine points apiece.

Chavez went for a team-high 18 points and dished out eight assists, Azbill contributed nine points and eight rebounds and Alena Sanchez pitched in with eight points.

Miller had a big night on the boards corralling 13 rebounds.

This week, the RedHawks (21-6) begin a quest for their first section title since 2001 as the No. 2 seed in the Northern Section CIF Division IV playoffs.

As such, Colusa earned a first round bye and played a quarterfinal game against the winner between No. 7 Yreka and No. 10 Gridley on Feb. 20, which was prior to the Pioneer Review print deadline.
