Colusa Girls Basketball Tops Pierce

COLUSA, CA  (MPG) – In the second meeting of the year between the Colusa and Pierce girl’s basketball teams, the RedHawks once again emerged victorious outscoring the visiting Bears 44-33 in a Sacramento Valley League game.

At the outset, defense prevailed as both teams made stops, but the momentum swung in the favor of Colusa just before the buzzer to end the first quarter when its leading scorer Danica Chavez drained a three to give the RedHawks a 10-9 advantage.

From that point, Colusa began to roll, going on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter as the Bears went ice cold.

To its credit, Pierce didn’t go away and fought back to draw within five, but the RedHawks responded again and took a 25-15 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Continuing into the second half, Colusa was able to maintain a comfortable cushion, made easier by the fact that Pierce, despite chances could not convert.

Chavez, who leads the Northern Section in free throw percentage and is sixth among the Northern Section scoring leaders, 18.9 points, finished with a game-high 27 points.

However, one of the unsung heroes for the RedHawks in the game was Carlie Sanchez, who is a key to the defense as Coach Manuel Cano pointed out.

“Carlie can guard a big or a regular player,” said Cano.  “She is always in good position and does a great job for us.”

Meanwhile for the Bears, Jaslene Condrey had a team-high 11 points, while Magali Jauregui pitched in with 10 points.

This week Colusa (12-6, 3-1) hosted Willows in a contest on Jan. 21 then travels to Winters to take on the Warriors tonight, while Pierce (12-6, 3-1) was in Durham on Tuesday and entertains East Nicolaus this evening.
