Good Start for Panther Girls Soccer

MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – In just their third season of soccer, the Maxwell girls are off to their best start so far, opening the season by playing Durham and Colusa to draws last week.

Maxwell’s Mia Gonzalez (3) and Allie Wills (14) have been a one-two scoring punch for the Panthers in the first two matches of the season.

In their first match on Jan. 6 against Mid-Valley League foe Durham, Mia Gonzalez scored the Panthers’ lone goal in the first half, but the Trojans came out after intermission and booted the equalizer.

Although the Panthers kept the pressure on Durham for the remainder of the match, the could not break through and as a result relied on strong play in goal from Bianca Minutti to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Making its way to Colusa two days later for a non-conference contest, Maxwell stunned the RedHawks by scoring the game-tying goal in the final minute of the match to come away with the 3-3 draw.

Panther goalkeeper Biance Minutti had good outings in matches against Durham and Colusa respectively.

While Colusa dominated possession, the Panthers made the most of their chances getting goals from Allie Wills and Gonzalez before Wills put another one in the back of the net just before the final whistle.

Maxwell was scrappy defensively as well, led by Minutti in goal in addition to fullbacks Fatima Cano and Aileen Melesio.

Searching for their first outright win of the year, the Panthers (0-0-2) squared off against Durham for the second time in a week on Monday, prior to entertaining Hamilton City on Thursday.
