Maxwell 55 –Mt. Shasta 6
MT. SHASTA CITY, CA (MPG) – Maxwell continued its hot start to the season pushing its record to 4-0 for the first time since 2007 with a rout of the Bears that prompted a second half running clock.
“We are playing pretty good football right now,” said head coach Lane Davis. “Our offense is dynamic, the defense is swarming to the ball and we have lots of confidence.”
On a night where the Panthers ran for 221 yards as a team and led 42-0 at halftime, running back Erik New continued to lead the way carrying six times for 105 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a pair of touchdown passes.
Walter Avery turned in a nice effort as well, scoring twice on runs of 23 and two yards respectively, in addition to hauling in five balls for 77 yards, while quarterback Noel Velazquez completed six passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.
Others adding to the Maxwell point total included Cristian Lara with a 47-yard touchdown reception, Brody Jones who ran it in from 25 yards out and Richard Diaz, who scored his first points of the season on a four-yard run.
Having completed the preseason by outscoring their opponents 181-49, Maxwell has a showdown in Biggs tonight against the 2023 Northern Section Division V runner-up Wolverines (2-1) who are coming off a big win over Durham last week.
Colusa 0 – Gridley 27
GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – Injuries continued to plague the RedHawks, who despite playing without four of their starting linemen were down just seven points at intermission.
However, disaster struck in the second half as leading rusher Adan Travis exited the game with yet another injury.
As a result, Colusa managed just 150 yards of offense, with 103 coming via the pass, while Gridley on the other hand, accrued 240 total yards, which included 228 on the ground.
Receiver Luke Pearson was a bright spot on offense making six catches for 61 yards, while Chris Ruiz and Damien Arreguin finished with nine tackles apiece for the defense.
Now 1-3 in non-conference play, the RedHawks have a tough matchup tonight in Arbuckle as they try to regroup against a Pierce squad (3-1) that is coming off its blowout victory over Williams in the Rice Bowl.
