Busy Week for RedHawk Volleyball

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – With two home games to start last week and then making their way to Southern California to participate in the Whittier Cardinal Classic, the RedHawks had a lot going on.

Colusa defensive specialist Olivia Huskey returns a serve in a match against Colfax on Sept. 4.

Yet, in spite of the hectic pace, they managed to come away with a 5-3 record over the span.

Against visiting River Valley in a match on Sept. 3, Colusa was taken to four sets, but eventually prevailed 25-12, 24-26, 25-20, 25-14 behind another big outing from Addison Lay, who finished the night with 20 kills, 19 assists and 13 digs.

Colusa’s Cindel Oliver sets a ball in the RedHawks’ win over Colfax on Sept. 4.

Cece Mitchum also turned in a solid performance with 11 kills, while McKenna Azbill contributed six.

Setter Cindel Oliver handed out an additional 18 assists in the win.

The RedHawks also got good production from the back row with libero Abril Guzman making 24 digs and Olivia Huskey tallying 18 more.

Following up the next evening in a match against Colfax, Colusa was challenged at the net by an aggressive Falcon team, but still was much more consistent than the visitors and triumphed in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-18.

Lay and Mitchum led the attack recording 12 and 10 kills respectively.

In facilitating the offense, Lay additionally made 14 assists, with Oliver dishing out 13.

The RedHawks’ Abby Coronado, hits through the block attempt of Colfax’s Lucy Reintjes in a match on Sept. 4.

Guzman had a team-high 17 digs, while Mitchum finished the match with 12.

Looking for some new competition at the Whittier Tournament, Colusa held its own defeating Diamond Bar, Pioneer (Whittier), and Pacifica, while falling to Etiwanda, Downey and La Mirada.

Things slowed down just a bit this week for the RedHawks (9-3) as they traveled to Willows on Tuesday, returned home to host Hamilton City on Wednesday and closed out the week in Winters on Thursday, where they opened Sacramento Valley League play.
