Williams 21 – Mt. Shasta 18
SHASTA CITY, CA (MPG) – On the road for their second game of the season, the Yellowjackets got a monster performance from running back Jorge Saavedra and as a result improved their record to 2-0.
With his 29 carries for 225 yards, Saavedra accounted for nearly 70 percent of the ‘Jackets’ offensive output, in addition to scoring twice and kicking three extra points.
Azael Velazquez contributed to the point total with a punt return for a touchdown.
Defensively, Alex Hernandez made six tackles for losses and had four sacks, Julio Rosales finished with seven tackles, while Jose Valdez pitched in with six.
Coach Forrest Bateman was happy with his team’s overall effort, but knows there are still things that need to be cleaned up.
“It was nice to get the win,” Bateman said. “We ran the ball very well, but got a little sloppy at times. Still, it was an overall step in the right direction.”
Things get tougher for Williams tonight when they make the short trip to Colusa to face a RedHawk team that is seeking its first win of the season.

Pierce 51 – Clear Lake 7
ARBUCKLE, CA (MPG) – A total team effort allowed the Bears to exact revenge for the last two preseason losses they suffered at the hands of the Cardinals as they had the game wrapped up by halftime with a 44-0 lead.
“The boys played great. I’m so proud of them,” said Coach Anthony Tapia. “Clear Lake was a formidable opponent, but I could tell our guys were hungry to score, so we spread the wealth around. It was a good sight to see.”
Nate McIntosh converted two of his five carries into touchdowns, while Drew Burnum, Austin Jorge, Calvin Bair and Nathan Gomez each ran one in as well.
Gavin Guynn scored for the Pierce defense on a pick six.
No other information about the game was available.
Pierce (2-0) hits the road for the first time this year when it travels to Fair Oaks to take on an unbeaten Del Campo squad that has outscored the competition 115-49 in three preseason games.

Colusa 18 – Yreka 38
COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Last Friday night was a disappointing one for the defending 6A state champs as not only did they drop their second straight game, but more significantly had two of their best linemen, in Joe Chavez and Ulises Campos, go down with injuries.
It was the second week in a row that the RedHawks have played without their full complement of starters and it has taken a toll as head coach Mikey Badaluco explained.
“I’ve never been a part of a team with so many injuries,” said Badaluco. “Jace Mackaben and Damien Arreguin both were injured in Colfax and have barely been able to practice, then losing Joe and Uli tonight has been tough. That being said, we need to improve our mental game and get things figured out quickly.”
Some bright spots for Colusa included Adan Travis rushing16 times for 118 yards and a touchdown, Eric Gonzalez scoring his first touchdown of the season and David Belmontes returning a kickoff for a score as well.
For the RedHawk defense, Chris Ruiz had a team-high nine tackles, while Travis made seven and Mackaben tallied five including two for losses.
Colusa (0-2) looks to right the ship tonight at home when it welcomes county rival Williams (2-0) to town.
