Away from home for most of last week, the Pierce volleyball team had moments of brilliance where its potential came shining through, but unfortunately at other junctures, struggled with inconsistency.

As such the Bears sandwiched road losses to Sutter and Shasta around a home win over Vacaville Christian and then went 2-2 at Sutter’s Battle in the Buttes Tournament against the likes of Chico, Yuba City, Las Plumas and East Nicolaus.
Beginning the week on the Huskies’ home court, Pierce out hit and out served Sutter, only to fall in five sets 25-9, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 11-15.
Magali Jauregui set the table for the Bear hitters by handing out 25 assists, while Leah Charter dished out 10 more and finished with a team-high 16 kills.
Charlie Wayman also turned in a good effort with eight kills and seven aces, as did Macey Myers who made 16 digs.
Back home to face Vacaville Christian on Sept. 4, Rylie Delepierre was dominant at the net hammering 14 kills in the 25-20, 26-28, 25-15, 25-9 victory.
Charter doubled up again with 19 assists to go along with 10 kills, Wayman and Maicey Hoebel registered seven kills apiece, while Jauregui had 18 assists.
As usual, Myers controlled the action on the back line with 21 digs.
Making the trip to Redding to play Shasta the following evening, the Bears couldn’t get much going and ultimately lost 22-25, 14-25, 16-25.
Myers was the constant recording 15 digs, while Delepierre accounted for nine points with six kills and three blocks.
Back in action on Saturday at Sutter’s Battle in the Buttes Tournament, Pierce put forth a spirited effort in a pool play loss to Chico, but never fully regained the intensity it showed against the Panthers, thus despite beating Yuba City and Las Plumas, it fell in the first round of the Gold Bracket to eventual champion East Nicolaus.
This week the Bears (12-5) looked to regain some of their continuity in two final preseason contests against Williams on Tuesday and Oroville on Wednesday before its first Sacramento Valley League match at home against Willows on Thursday.
