Chaena Laux, of Colusa, was named to the Fort Lewis College Dean’s List for the Fall 2023 semester.

Vote on Rice Commission Referendum Underway

All 1,324 ballots have been mailed out to rice growers and handlers and voting is now underway on the 5-year California Rice Commission referendum to affirm that the rice industry wishes to continue the program.

The Commission exists to support the 2,500 rice growers and handlers, most of whom are in the Sacramento Valley, in areas of conservation, legislation, public education, and regulation. The commission structure provides for industry representation of both growers and handlers who split the per hundredweight assessment equally.

If the majority votes to continue the California Rice Commission, operations will proceed under the direction of the Board of Directors. If a majority of both growers and handlers vote to discontinue the CRC, assessments will cease and operation will wind down over the next 12 months, commission officials said.

The deadline to return ballots is March 6.

The CDFA will conduct all the balloting and tally the votes. If a ballot has not been received, growers and handlers can contact CDFA’s Ben Kardokus directly at (916) 749-5473 or ben.kardokus@cdfa.ca.gov.
