COLUSA COUNTY, CA (MPG) – There will be five local contests in California’s early primary election, slated for March 5, 2024.
With one special district election behind her, new Colusa County Clerk Recorder Cristy Edwards said she is now preparing to oversee her first statewide election.
Up for election will be three seats on the Colusa County Board of Supervisors, including the District 2 position currently held by Daurice Kalfsbeek Smith, and the District 3 position, which is held by Chairman Kent Boes. The District 4 seat, held by longtime Supervisor Gary Evans, will also be up for election.
“We also have the Republican Central Committee filing this year,” Edwards said.
Also on the ballot will be the position of Colusa County Superior Court Judge, currently held by the Hon. Jeffrey A. Thompson, who plans to retire.
Thompson was first appointed to the bench in 2008 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and has served as presiding judge of the court since taking office.
Edwards said the petition-in-lieu-of-filing fee period opened for all offices on Sept. 14 and will close on Nov. 8.
“During this period, individuals interested in running for a voter-nominated or nonpartisan office may use the In-Lieu processes of obtaining registered voters’ signatures on the petition in order to reduce or eliminate the filing fee,” Edwards said.
Smith was elected to District 2 Supervisorial seat in 2020, replacing outgoing Supervisor John Loudon, who did not seek reelection. Boes was elected to his first term of office in 2016 in a contested election against incumbent Supervisor Mark Marshal. Evans was first elected in 2004, when he displaced incumbent candidate Bill Waite in a contested election.

Voters will also be selecting the party’s nominee for U.S. President (party nominated) and voting on other state and federal offices.
The last day to register to vote for the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election is Feb. 20, 2024.
All Colusa County active registered voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot, which will be mailed by the county elections office beginning Feb. 5.
Vote-by-mail ballots can be returned by mail, at a drop-off location, or your county elections office, officials said. Vote centers open for early in-person voting in all Voter’s Choice Act counties beginning on Feb. 24, 2024. Ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by March 12, 2024. H
