MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – The American Legion Post No. 218 in Maxwell held a two-day Flag Retirement ceremony, Sept. 12-13.
Maxwell Unified School District elementary, junior high, and high school students and staff assisted Legion members in giving more than 200 worn and tattered American Flags a proper send-off.
According to the United States Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Students and staff properly unfolded each flag and veterans placed them in a fire-pit for proper disposal.
“We had a lot of flags, and the kids did a great job participating,” said Post No. 218 Commander Ronnie Azevedo.
Flags that are no longer serviceable can be turned over to the American Legion by placing them in the depository at the American Legion Hall in Maxwell.
