Quilting in the Buttes
The Sutter Buttes Quilt Guild will host its 8th annual Biennial Show, Sept 16-17, at the Sutter Youth Building, 7780 Butte House Road, in Sutter. The Sutter Buttes Quilt Guild is a group of 41 members who have made service an integral part of their guild. “We are a small guild but we’re mighty in what we accomplish for our community,” said Diana Tatro. “We donate to Rideout Cancer Center, Dialysis Center, and Casa de Esperanza. Presently we are collecting quilts for Maui Fire survivors.” The Sutter Buttes Quilt Guild will have over 100 works of art at the show. There will also be vendors, food available, an opportunity quilt, and lovely baskets available to win. The show will be held from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Sept. 16, and from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, Sept. 17. The public is invited to attend. Admission is $7. “We hope to see everyone at the show,” Tatro said.
Museum to Honor Fallen Soldier
The Sutter County Museum will honor Colusa County’s Rueben “Boy” Lopez, a U.S. soldier killed in action more than a decade ago, with a peace pole dedication on Sept. 21.
The speaker series program and the dedication will be held from 5:30-7 PM at the Museum, 1333 Butte House Road, Yuba City, on the International Day of Peace. Lopez, 27, was Colusa County’s second casualty of the Afghanistan War. He was killed on Aug. 11, 2011, in the Kandahar Province, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his transportation vehicle. Lopez graduated from Williams High School and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, N.Y. The attack that killed Lopez killed four other U.S. soldiers.
Barbara and Scott Hankins, of Meridian, commissioned the peace pole, a hand-crafted monument that displays the message “May Peace Prevail.” Peace poles also have been placed in Lopez’s honor at various locations in Colusa, Williams, and Arbuckle, as well as at the State Capitol Building in Sacramento. A five-mile sketch of the Fallen Hero Memorial Highway, located 100 yards north of the Hahn Road and the Highway 99 intersection to the Williams city limits, is also dedicated to Lopez.
