Colusa City Police Department recognized

Colusa Chief of Police Josh Fitch, left, accepted a certificate of appreciation from Colusa Mayor Greg Ponciano on June 6, 2023, for his department’s service to the citizens of Colusa for more than 100 years.

The Colusa City Council on June 6 recognized the Colusa Police Department’s lengthy service to the citizens of Colusa.

Colusa Chief of Police Josh Fitch accepted a certificate of appreciation from Colusa Mayor Greg Ponciano, for his department’s effort to protect life and property, and keep the peace of their beautiful city.

The Colusa Police Department was formed in 1922 and has had 10 police chiefs. Fitch has served the community for 18 years as a law enforcement officer for the CPD and has been at the helm of the department since 2015.

The Colusa City Council recognized the milestone of the Colusa Police Department, originally called the Colusa Town Marshal’s Office, ahead of the 2023 Founders Day celebration on June 17.

The Town Board of Trustees (predecessor of the City Council) incorporated Colusa on June 16, 1868, in response to the need for law enforcement to deal with roaming hogs and stray dogs.

Among the first actions of the Board was to impose a $1 tax on impounded hogs.

Owners had the option to pay the fee to recover their animal, according to news articles of the time. If not recovered, the hog was auctioned off to the highest bidder with the funds deposited into the Marshal’s operating budget. ■
