Family Fair returns to county fairgrounds

Children enjoy activities at the annual Family Fair on Saturday at the Colusa County Fairgrounds, hosted by the Colusa County Office of Education’s Children’s Services and Local Child Care Planning Council.

It’s been a number of years since the annual Family Fair was held at the Colusa County Fairgrounds, and families were happy to see its return to its original location.

Colusa County Local Child Care Planning Council and Colusa County Office of Education Childrens Services host the event each April to celebrate Month of the Young Child and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Colusa County families attended the Family Fair in droves. Kids received goodies like children’s books, bookmarks, pencils, activity books and crayons, treats, and bubbles, while parents received information about literacy, employment opportunities, and health.

“This has always been a great event,” said Carmen Orozco, who took her grandkids to the event on Saturday. “I think the weather being the best we’ve had in months made it seem all the more special. I’m glad they held it here like they did when it was with Western Days.”

Free books, snacks, and goodie bags are the highlight of the Colusa County Family Fair, held each April for Child Abuse Prevention Month and Month of the Young Child.

Children also enjoyed a petting zoo, outdoor games, sensory activities, and arts and crafts. They also participated in a jam session with CCOE Division Director of Support Services Joe Moye, who is also an accomplished children’s performer.

Government and private agencies participated, included Colusa Fire Department, Colusa County Probation Department, First 5 Colusa, CCOE Food Services, Pneumacare, First Northern Bank, Playzeum Yuba-Sutter, Colusa County Public Health, Colusa County Tobacco Education, Senior Nutrition, Colusa County Library, Family Action Centers of Colusa County, Ampla Health, Master Gardeners, Partners for Health, First Five, Children and Family Commission, Premier Mushrooms, and Center for Healthy Communities (CSU), among others.

The Colusa Lions Club provided lunch at no cost to all those in attendance.

The Family Fair has been held annually, except during the pandemic, since 2003. ■
