Hundreds of pieces of art, created by Williams students, were on display at the annual Williams Art Show last week.
The annual event included music performed by Williams Jr./Sr. High School band and a raffle donated prizes.
The long-running event is organized each spring by Williams art teacher Salley Hedley, who teaches her students to draw, paint, do slab and coil clay work, create 3D projects, and work with a variety of materials.
She also teaches her students to define art.
“Art is a way to express yourself,” said Ariana Torres. “You can draw what you feel and connect with it. It’s also a way to connect with others because they relate to your art. Art can also bring out your creative side.”
Among the Best of Show winners were Yasmine Quintero, 10th grade, for her acrylic painting “Koi Pond.”
Estefany Carabeo, ninth grade, earned a Best of Show nod for her “Bad Ducky” colored pencil drawing.
Sophie Gonzalez, sixth grade, was recognized for a crayon drawing of “Leaf Bunny.”
Yadira Puebla’s “onion teapot” and “Infected Mushroom” earned two Best of Show in ceramics. Dayana Huerta was recognized for her “Altered Mona Lisa” oil painting.
Puebla and Huerta are both in the ninth grade.
The acrylic painting “Icarus” won Best of Show for 11th grader Esme Velazquez.
Other exhibits included “My 7 Wonders of the World” drawings, digital art, Tim Burton style portraits, American Sign Language drawings, and many others. ■
