Colusa seeking grant for wildland firefighting gear

The Colusa City Council last week approved the submission of a grant on behalf of the Fire Department that could help with the purchase of communication equipment and personal protective clothing and equipment. The council voted 5-0 to request up to $20,000 from CAL Fire, which is accepting applications from fire departments in rural areas and communities with a population of 10,000 or less. T

he funding comes from the Rural Fire Capacity Program of the Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act of 1978, said City Manager Jesse Cain. The RFC Grant Program provides funding to organize, train, and equip fire departments in rural areas and rural communities to prevent and suppress fires. The award is also meant to help bring departments into compliance with the National Fire Protection Association 1977 standard on protective gear for wildland firefighting, including radio equipment, alert monitors, and pagers, officials said.

The grant will have a 20 percent cash match, paid for from Strike Team Funds, officials said.
