Assembly Republicans elect Gallagher as leader

The Assembly Republican Caucus on Tuesday unanimously voted to elect Assemblyman James Gallagher, of Yuba City, the new Assembly Republican Leader.

The California State Assembly Republican Caucus is the formal organization of Republican members in the California State Assembly, who hold 19 of its 80 seats after the 2020 general election, and is one of the Assembly’s two officially recognized political party caucuses.

Gallagher replaces Assembly Republican Leader Emeritus Marie Waldron, of Valley Center, who has served as the Minority Leader of the State Assembly the past three years.

“I am grateful for the trust my colleagues have placed in me to help lead our caucus and work to better the lives of Californians up and down the state,” Gallagher said, in a statement. “Assemblymember Waldron has been a tremendous leader for us winning victories throughout California. I plan to build on her legacy as the new leader of the caucus.”

Waldron said that during her tenure as Republican Leader, she has been laser focused on growing the Republican caucus by providing Californians an alternative to the high taxes, out-of-control crime, and runaway inflation that have resulted from Democratic leadership.

“It has been an honor to have led our caucus since 2018,” Waldron said.
