The Stagehands Theatre will raise the curtain for the first time in two years.
The six-member cast of “Always a Bridesmaid” will take to the stage on Friday, and have set back-to-back weekends for the public to see the two-act comedy.
Stagehands had just started rehearsals for “Always a Bridesmaid” back in March of 2020 when COVID hit, and the cast is excited to finally be able to return to the boards.
“It feels so good,” said Lora Weekes, who co-directs the play with Sharon Reische. “Everyone was so excited, and it’s amazing that we all just came back together and jumped back into the swing of things.”
Weekes, who last directed “A Doublewide Texas Christmas” in 2018, said “Always a Bridesmaid” is a two-act comedic romp that takes place over seven years after four friends swore to keep the promise they made to be in each other’s weddings…no matter what.
The play was written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas C. Hope, and Jamie Wooten, and is set in the same central Virginia bridal suite, separated by the changes in the lives of the characters, changing monologues, and the passage of time.
“There’s something magical about how mere words on a page in a script, over time, become a living, breathing story that exists for a short time, then is gone,” Weekes noted. “It’s truly a labor of love and our gifts to you – our friends, our families, our town, our community.”
The cast includes Rebecca Azevedo, Susan Gibbs, Nicole Helms, Maddison Landreth, Stephanie Ponciano, and Beth Young.
“Always a Bridesmaid” will run back-to-back weekends on Friday and Saturday nights, Nov. 5, 6, 12, and 13. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Curtain at 7:15 PM. A special matinee will be held this Sunday, Nov. 7. Doors open at 1:30 PM. Curtain at 2:15 PM.
Tickets are $10 for all performances and are available at the door. ■
