Its been two years since Colusa County veterans, their families, and the community came together for a picnic in the park.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of what would have been the 10th anniversary of the fundraiser in 2020.
But for the more than 250 veterans and friends from Colusa, Glenn, Yuba, and Sutter counties that attended the event, the barbecue lunch and raffle in Veterans Memorial Park in Colusa was just like old times.
” I always come to this to support the veterans,” said Willows resident Richard Immoos.
The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Colusa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2441 and the Maxwell American Legion Post No. 218.
Raffle prizes, including guns, gift baskets, and gift certificates donated by local stores, businesses, restaurants, and individuals always give the organization the financial boost they need, officials said.
” We couldnt do this without the support of the community,” said John Tiernan, who pulled the lucky tickets.
The money raised during the picnic is used to help the veterans of Colusa County with various needs and complete veteran community service projects.
Several organizations participated, including the Yuba Sutter Stand Down, a nonprofit organization that provides vision, hearing, and dental services to veterans. They also help veterans with clothing needs, employment assistance, education advice, and mental health counseling.
” We provide services for all veterans regardless of discharge status,” said Mike Nichols, president.
Veterans Services Officer Don Parsons also had information available at the picnic.
Parsons said the picnic provides an opportunity for veterans to connect with each other and organizations that are there to offer help.
The picnic is held annually on the last Saturday in July. –
