On Saturday, the Indian Valley Fire Department and the Colusa County Sheriffs Office responded to a water rescue at East park Reservoir in an area known as Hide-Out Cove.
At about 6:22 PM, the report of a 42-year-old man, Oscar Sarvelio Portillo, was having issues swimming and was struggling to get back to shore. Portillo ultimately went below the surface and never resurfaced.
According to officials, Portillos family and neighboring campsites jumped into the water in an attempt to assist and locate the individual.
” At about 8:34 PM, the Sheriffs Office Boating Safety Unit, along with Indian Valley Fire Personnel, located and recovered the drowned individual,” said Sergeant Arnold Navarro, in a Press Release posted to social media.
Sgt. Navarro said that Portillo was not wearing a life preserver and appeared to tire while trying to swim across the cove.
The investigation into the drowning continues, and is pending autopsy results.
