In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, the Williams Fire Department visited Barbara Mayberrys Transitional Kindergarten class at Williams Elementary School on Tuesday, October 7, 2014.

Students learned how to ˜Stop, Drop and Roll from WFD Cadet Ben Mays, and they learned what to if there is a fire in the home.

Each student was given the opportunity to see the tools and safety gear the firefighters use; several students tried on a fire helmet and jacket.

Outside of the classroom, the students were treated to a close-up tour of a real fire truck.

” Students were shown all the safety and emergency tools and firefighting equipment,” said Mayberry, ” each student was able to hold a nozzle and watch as water was pumped out the hose and sprayed into the street.

Students also watched as the firefighters demonstrated an emergency simulation involving a backboard.

” It was a favorite among the students,” said Mayberry, ” classmate James Velazquez volunteered to be the injured victim.

Soon the Williams Fire Department Team was dispatched to a real emergency and students watched as the men quickly gathered up their gear, climbed into the truck, and sped away with lights flashing and sirens sounding.

Each student received a fire helmet, a firefighter badge sticker, a fire safety coloring book, and information to take home and share with their families.

Ms. Mayberry and her students would like to thank the volunteers for their time and patience.

” For the students, this is one of the best days of the school year!” Mayberry said.
