Colusa Meat Facility Nears Completion

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – A new meat processing facility in Colusa is nearing completion of its first phase, a project developers say will give Northern California livestock producers another option for federally and state-inspected processing.

Colusa Industrial Properties is developing the facility at 7295 Industrial Way in the Colusa Industrial Park. Plans call for processing cattle, swine, sheep and goats under U.S. Department of Agriculture and California Department of Food and Agriculture inspection.

The first phase includes a 3,600-square-foot harvesting facility and 1,000 square feet of cold storage. Construction also includes USDA inspection offices.

The project aims to address limited processing capacity for small and mid-sized livestock producers who may otherwise face longer transportation distances and processing wait times.

According to Colusa Industrial Properties, having processing closer to livestock operations could reduce transportation costs, animal stress and weight loss while giving producers greater access to USDA-inspected markets.

The developers also see the facility as an option for producers who market smaller numbers of animals and may have difficulty using larger processing operations.

“Regional processors can better serve producers marketing one or a few animals at a time,” project organizers said in an Aug. 14 update.

The facility could also serve restaurants, institutions, butcher shops, carnicerias and other businesses seeking locally processed meat.

Project development and community outreach have received Catalyst grant funding through the California Jobs First program and the We Prosper Together collaborative.

We Prosper Together reports awarding $9 million to 22 projects in Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties. The Colusa processing facility is among those projects.

The final scheduled tour will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Colusa Industrial Properties offices, 50 Sunrise Blvd. in Colusa.
