COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Colusa County residents will have one final opportunity to dispose of tires at no cost this Saturday, March 28, as the county concludes its annual Tire Amnesty program.

The free collection will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Colusa County Road Department, 5714 E St. in Williams.

The program is open to Colusa County residents only.

County officials announced an expansion for the final day. In addition to passenger vehicle tires, the county will accept tractor and semi-truck tires, with a limit of two per resident.

Public Works Director Colt Esenwein confirmed the change noting the county amended its grant to allow the additional tire types.

“The board asked if semi-truck tires could be accepted and we made that happen,” Esenwein said. “We did have to amend the grant and get some approvals.”

Esenwein said the expanded program comes with higher costs due to the size of the tires.

“Every tractor tire is worth about five regular tires,” he said. “So, the costs go up dramatically.”

Esenwein stressed that the program was made possible through a grant from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, also known as CalRecycle.

The county will continue to accept up to nine passenger car or light truck tires per resident. All passenger tires must be removed from rims.

Esenwein reported strong participation during the most recent collection day, with 964 tires collected. He said most of those were semi-truck tires.

Residents who need to transport more than nine passenger tires, up to 20, must contact Colusa County Public Works at (530) 458-0466 to obtain a Transportation Exemption.
