In Loving Memory of Melvin Lawrence Cox, AKA Hap

Melvin Lawrence Cox, affectionately known as Hap, was born on December 27, 1932, and peacefully left this world on December 25, 2023. He lived a life filled with love, service, and devotion.

Hap served his country with honor in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Sergeant and earning recognition as a decorated combat veteran of the Korean War. His dedication and bravery in the face of adversity left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

In 1945, Hap moved from Imperial County to Colusa, where he would spend the next 78 years of his life. He graduated from Colusa High School in 1951, leaving behind a legacy of academic achievement and community spirit. It was during a high school baseball game in 1951 that Happy first laid eyes on Sandra Cox (Dunlap), his future wife. Their love story began, and they married in October 1952, embarking on a remarkable journey together that spanned 71 years.

Hap was a devoted husband to Sandra, and together they built a life filled with joy, companionship, and unwavering commitment. Their love was a source of inspiration to all who knew them.

In addition to his loving wife, Sandra, Hap is survived by his Sister Harriet; Children, Kim Gunnoe (Woody), and Steven Cox (Christine); Grandchildren, Craig Dunn, Melissa Rainsbarger, Michelle Cox, Mandisa Cox, Alana Cox; Great-Grandchildren, Madison Martin, Benjamin Rainsbarger, Nathaniel Raj, Cayden Raj, Kaymen Dunn, Jada Raj, Kingsley Dunn, Arlo Cox; GreatGreat-Grandchildren, Macie Martin, and Mallory Martin.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents, Merritt & Viola Cox; son, Michael Cox; brothers, Robert & Pete; sisters, Hellen, Viola.

Melvin Lawrence Cox leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication.
His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May he rest in eternal peace.

Military Honors will be rendered in honor of Melvin Lawrence Cox, also known as Hap, at Veterans Memorial Park in Colusa on February 3 at 1 PM. This solemn ceremony will pay tribute to Hap dedicated service in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Following the Military Honors, a Celebration of Life will be held at Rocco’s Banquet Hall, providing an opportunity for friends and family to come together to share memories, comfort one another, and celebrate the remarkable life of Happy. The event will serve as a reflection of the love and impact he had on the lives of those around him.

All friends and family are welcome to join in honoring and remembering Hap during these events.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a Charity of Your Choice.

This gesture reflects Happy’s spirit of generosity and selflessness, ensuring that his memory continues to make a positive impact on the world.
