COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Criminal proceedings were once again halted in the case of a Colusa man charged with attempted murder.
Colusa County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Thompson on Feb. 14 ordered Raul Daniel Calderon, 32, of Colusa, to be returned to a state mental institution.
Colusa police officers arrested Calderon more than a year ago after they responded to a call of multiple gun shots fired near the alley at the corner Bridge and Fremont streets.
Calderon was still at the location when officers arrived and had reportedly fired six or seven rounds from an AR 15 rifle at another individual, officials said.
The alleged victim was no longer at the scene but was found uninjured later the same day. Colusa police officials said there was no apparent conflict between them.
Calderon has reportedly suffered with mental health issues, calling into questioning his ability to aid in his own defense. He was hospitalized last year at a state hospital until they deemed him competent to stand trial and was returned to the Colusa County Jail, where he has been held without bail.
However, officials said issues with his mental competency remain. Calderon was unable to appear in court for a hearing last week and remained in custody at the jail under suicide watch.
Calderon is charged with one count of felony attempted murder and a special allegation for discharging a firearm.
The rifle had reportedly been purchased legally, and Calderon was not prohibited from having a gun, police officials said.
Thompson ordered him back to the state hospital, stating he hoped they would do a better job of treating him before returning him as competent to stand trial.
