Psychiatric evaluation underway for alleged Colusa gunman

Criminal proceedings have halted in the case of a Colusa man charged with attempted murder.

Colusa County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Thompson ordered Raul Daniel Calderon, 32, to be evaluated by a court-appointed psychiatrist after Calderon’s Public Defender, Albert Smith, on Feb. 22, expressed doubt that his client could aid in his own defense at trial.
Smith said his client was not opposed to the psychiatric inquiry.

Calderon has remained in custody at the Colusa County Jail following his Jan. 28 arrest.
Colusa Police Department Lt. Sara Martin said Colusa police officers responded to a call of multiple gun shots fired near the alley at the corner Bridge and Fremont streets, around 3:15 PM on Jan. 28.

Martin said Calderon was still at the location when officers arrived, and that he reportedly had fired six or seven rounds from an ArmaLite 15 rifle.

The alleged victim was no longer at the scene, Martin said, but was found later the same day. Police also believe there was no apparent “bad blood” between the two men.

The rifle had been purchased legally, and Calderon was not prohibited from having a gun, Martin said.

Caderon is charged with one count of felony attempted murder and a special allegation for discharging a firearm.

Calderon, who has not yet entered a plea, is scheduled to appear in court on March 20 for receipt of the doctor’s report. ■
