Man shot in altercation sentenced

Caleb W. Wills, 43, of Princeton, who was shot but not seriously injured a few days before Christmas in 2021 in an altercation of his making, was sentenced last week to three years in jail after pleading no contest on June 27 to a felony charge of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

Wills was initially arrested and charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including aggravated trespassing and assault with a deadly weapon, after he reportedly attacked an individual with a blunt object on the sidewalk in the 900 block of Jay Street in Colusa during an argument, before turning his weapon on the resident who tried to intervene.
Melvish Sharma, who shot Wills in self defense, was quickly cleared of any wrongdoing, officials said.

Following the Jay Street incident, the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wills a few days later on Dec. 29, after the Sheriff’s Office responded to East Clay Street regarding a person, later identified as Wills, exiting a crawl space from under a residence.

The resident reportedly confronted Wills, who is believed to have spent the night under the house, in the backyard of the residence and subdued him until law enforcement responded.
In addition to his sentence on the assault charge, Wills was sentenced to six months in jail for trespassing, which will run concurrently with his other sentence, as per the terms of his plea deal.

Wills has a lengthy criminal history in Glenn and Colusa Counties, and was on probation for domestic violence and vandalism at the time of his arrest.

Wills received an additional six month concurrent sentence for violating the court’s order to obey all laws.

Wills will serve out his sentence in the Colusa County Jail, where he has been held since his Dec. 29 arrest. He will receive 400 days credit off his sentence for time served and earned, and will be on three years supervised probation following his release. â–
