Public Defender excused after receiving threats

Proceedings against the Princeton man facing multiple charges stemming from an altercation on Jay Street on Dec. 21, which resulted in him being shot, will resume next week with him getting a new lawyer.

Colusa County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Thompson relieved Marysville attorney Kelsi Wheeler from having to represent Caleb W. Wills, 43, after she said Wills sent her threatening letters in the mail.

Wills, who has a lengthy criminal history in Colusa and Glenn counties, was charged with attacking an individual with a blunt object during the Dec. 21 argument, before he turned on the resident who tried to intervene.

Wills was scheduled to go to trial on June 23 for felony assault with a deadly weapon and other misdemeanor crimes.

Wills has been in custody at the Colusa County Jail since Dec. 29, after committing additional crimes, including aggravated trespassing, while on bail.

Wheeler said the threats against her and Wills’ repeated attack on her professionally has made it impossible for her to represent him without conflict. She also said she no longer felt safe meeting with him.

Thompson appointed Lake County attorney William Conwell to act as his public defender.
Conwell is expected to make his first appearance on Wills’ behalf on May 23. ■
