Maxwell man facing felony weapons charges

A Maxwell man charged with multiple felonies in connection to a shooting of an inhabited dwelling in January has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges.

Martin Torres Mendez, 24, will appear in Colusa County Superior Court on Monday for the setting of a preliminary hearing. Medez is being held in the Colusa County Jail without bail, pending court proceedings, officials said.

Colusa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mendez on Feb. 24 after a lengthy investigation by the Special Operations and Response Team in connection to a shooting that occured in the 100  block of Oak Street in Maxwell on Jan. 31.

Mendez was arrested after the SOAR Team executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 block of North California Street, which turned up a stolen short barreled rifle and two stolen handguns with altered serial numbers, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Jose Ruiz.

“The firearms are suspected to be stolen from a theft that occurred in Williams,” Ruiz said Monday, in a news release. Several bags of ammunition and a cell phone were also found.

Luiz said that after a search warrant was executed on Mendez’s cell phone, investigators located several images of suspected child pornography.

On Friday, law enforcement officials served two additional search warrants at the 400 block of North California Street and the 400 block of Old Hwy 99 in Maxwell. A hard drive, two laptops, several USBs, and several micro SD cards were taken as evidence, Ruiz said.

This investigation is still ongoing and the public is encouraged to call the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office’s Investigations unit at (530) 458-0200 if they have information about this case.

Mendez pleaded not guilty on March 21 to all charges, including possessing a short barreled rifle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and other felonies.
