Colusa man sentenced to prison for death of son

A Colusa man was sentenced Nov. 19, to 15 years to life in state prison for the second degree murder of his son in a DUI crash in Sutter County in 2020.

Tony Daniel Kesterson, 32, in a stipulated plea agreement last September, admitted to driving intoxicated on the evening of April 19, 2020, with his 10-year-old son Nathan in the car.

The California Highway Patrol said Kesterson was traveling eastbound on Highway 20, just east of South Tarke Road, in Yuba City, at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle, drove across the westbound lane, and collided with the concrete divide.

According to reports, Kesterson was weaving in and out of traffic at speeds of around 90 mph, had passed multiple vehicles on a double yellow line, and was driving recklessly shortly before the crash.

Following the collision with the concrete, Keterson’s 2007 Ford Fusion was immediately hit by a 2014 Toyota Tacoma, whose driver was unable to avoid striking the vehicle directly in his path. Nathen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ketterson is expected to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before being eligible to be released on parole.
