Williams man accused of assaulting elderly woman 

A 25-year-old Williams man pleaded not guilty on Monday to elder abuse of a dependent female and assault with a deadly weapon.   

Williams Police Department officers arrested Edgar Ortiz on Oct. 27 after responding to a report of an assault that occurred at a residence in the 500 block of Venice Boulevard, said Police Chief Jim Saso, in a news release. 

Saso said when officers arrived at the scene, they located the assault victim, who had sustained severe injuries. 

Saso said Williams Fire Department personnel and Enloe paramedicstreated the woman before she was airlifted to the hospital.  

Through the course of the investigation, police officers identified Ortiz as a suspect and arrested him initially on suspician of attempted murder, a charge the District Attorney has decided not to pursue. 

At the time of his arrest, Ortiz was on bond while awaiting court proceedings on July 19 charges of disobeying a court order and resisting a peace officer. 

Ortiz remains in custody at the Colusa County Jail awaiting a bail hearing. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 15 for the setting of a preliminary hearing. 

Meanwhile, Ortiz has denied the two special allegations of causing great bodily injury.charged in the case, which could greatly extend his sentence if he is convicted.
