Trial is set to begin in September for the Woodland man accused of robbing the Arbuckle Umpqua Bank in 2019.
Judge Jeffrey A. Thompson scheduled Sept. 29-Oct. 1 for trial with Oct. 6 set aside for a fourth day if needed.
Thompson, however, cautioned the pro per defendant, John Williams III, that he would revoke Williams right to represent himself if he continued to burden the court with frivolous proceedings because he lacks the legal knowledge and experience to try a criminal case.
Williams has appeared in court about 35 times since he was arranged on robbery charges in connection with the July 5, 2019 armed holdup in Arbuckle.
Williams is accused of being the first of two disguised men to walk into the bank with a handgun. He is said to have made off with more than $2,000 in cash before fleeing in a stolen Toyota Tundra pickup.
The robbery led to a high speed vehicle pursuit by a Colusa County Sheriffs Deputy into Yolo County, before both suspects managed to escape through an orchard on foot.
Although Williams has been linked to the crime through DNA, according to court testimony, the 42-year-old continues to plead his innocence.
Williams is scheduled to appear again in court on Monday on his motion to have evidence dismissed. He has also motioned again for his release on low or no bail, along with motions for pretrial discovery and transcripts, all of which will be heard.
Colusa County Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Farrell, who is prosecuting the case, said despite the defendants continued motions for discovery, Williams has already received all the evidence the state has against him.
Although Williams has refused to hire an attorney or have an attorney appointed to him if he cannot afford one, Judge Thompson assigned Public Defender Brandon Williams to serve as his advisory counsel. The court has also provided the defendant with a private investigator to aid him in building a defense.
Thompson warned Williams that if pressed to its limits, the court could revoke his pro per status if found to be incapable of properly following procedures.
