The Colusa Planning Commission got its first glimpse at a proposed plan late last month for a new commercial center southeast of Colusa, for a new Arco gas station.
While the project could be a number of years away, developer, Amarjit Cheema, and the City of Colusa plan to forge ahead, depending on how fast the economy bounces back from the COVID-19 shutdown.
While actual designs and environmental documents for the project are still in process, the Planning Commission approved the developer agreement at its April 22 meeting.
Cheema, a lifetime resident of Yuba City, plans to build the Arco Station on the site of the former Mobile Oil Company bulk fuels facility, located on 1601 State Highway 20, and has been in talks with a major coffee company and fast food chain to join in, possibly Starbucks and Taco Bell.
The project will be built on about 4.66 acres of land on Highway 20, which Cheema purchased about four years ago, and 1.26 acres on Wescott Road, which is in escrow.
The project is to include the realignment of Wescott Road with the addition of a traffic signal, city officials said.
Colusa Community Development Manager Bryan Stice said the addition of the development would generate a significant additional amount of sales tax for the city, and lead the way for more commercial and retail activities.
The Colusa City Council will have final approval on the developer agreement, and ultimately the project.
