On Sunday June 7th, 2015, Carlos Mendoza Galvan, 16 and a longtime resident of Williams, was awarded the prestigious Hattie Award the Colusa County Arts Council at the Colusa County Fairgrounds.
The Hattie Award was given by the Fair in honor of Harriet Resch (or ” Hattie) who gave out three awards ($50 and two $25) to the Best of Division artists that caught her eye.
Carlos ” Winter Birches” captures his creativity and high energy personality, and Hattie liked how colorful it was.
He also won a first place and Best of Division ribbons.
Carlos is a student in Mrs. Hedleys Opportunity Program at Williams Jr./Sr. High School and with her help he has made great strides toward a better educational career.
Mrs. Hedley teaches 7th-12th-grade high-risk students helping them with credits, grades, and behavior. She teaches them art along with a variety of other subjects. She also teaches at Williams
High School with a beginning art course. Mendoza has been a crucial asset to the Opportunity Program and has improved school culture on campus.
” Carlos is one of the most helpful students I have worked with,” said Hedley, ” He is not always confident in his talents and accomplishments though. When I work with him this year on art and his other schoolwork, he says that he is not able to do it. He said that he could not draw or do art, but then he is always happy with the result. I am glad that others see his potential. I am so proud of this kiddo.
Carlos plans on becoming an accountant or marine biologist but admits how he likes art and thinks that he draws so much better than the beginning of this school year.
