Williams 28 – Hamilton City 20

Williams’ quarterback Gio Velazquez threw a pair of touchdown passes in the Yellowjackets’ win in Hamilton City.

Williams improved to 2-0 in Mid-Valley League play after topping Hamilton City for the first time since 2021.

Azael Velazquez ran for 205 yards on 29 carries, the fourth time this season he has eclipsed the 100-yard mark, and scored twice to again lead the ‘Jacket offense.

Having rushed for 862 yards thus far, Velazquez is third in the Northern Section in that capacity and is also third in touchdowns scored.

Quarterback Gio Velazquez tossed a pair of scoring strikes, one to Varion Gonzalez from 15 yards out and the other to Eric Lievanos which was good from 20.

Defensively, Ricardo Medina and Giovanni Luna made 10 tackles apiece, while Javier Saavedra and Julien Munoz each finished with nine.

Overall, the effort pleased Coach Forrest Bateman who had this to say about the game, “We came out and played a great first half. Aza was fantastic again but we were also able to throw with some success. The team battled as a whole and I am proud of another solid performance.”

Williams (5-1, 2-0) now turns its attention to a contest on the road against county and MVL rival Maxwell this Friday night.

Maxwell 36 – Portola 14

Maxwell’s Louis Minutti had a big game on special teams in the Panthers’ victory over Portola.

On a night where Maxwell honored its 2006 section championship squad, Coach Zach Urrutia pointed to the play of his special teams unit in the Panthers’ victory over visiting Portola.

Urrutia specifically singled out Louis Minutti, who made good on four PATs in addition to returning a punt for touchdown along with Lucas Bowen, who ran a kick back for a score.

Vincent Orozco completed all seven of his passes and rushed for 106 yards to lead the offense, while Landon Barrett made a team-high 17 tackles to spearhead the defense.

Colt Montgomery recorded nine tackles with Alex Krug and Robert Shadley each registering a sack.

Maxwell (5-1, 2-0) hosts Williams this week in a game that will knock one team from the ranks of the unbeaten in the MVL.

Colusa 12 – Durham 27

RedHawk receiver Asa Selover caught six passes for 81 yards and scored twice in a loss to Durham.

Five turnovers proved to be the RedHawks undoing as they fell in a Sacramento Valley League tilt in Durham.

One bright spot for Colusa’s offense was Asa Selover who hauled in six passes for 81 yards and accounted for both RedHawk touchdowns.

Coach Mason Niccum did however report that his defense played well amidst all the adversity.

Julian Aranada made a team-high eight tackles, Dante Santana picked off a pass and Diego Bedolla recovered a fumble.

This week Colusa (2-3, 0-2) has another tough task when it makes the trek to play Paradise on Oct. 9.
