RUMSEY, CA (MPG) – Firefighters made significant progress Wednesday on the Rumsey Fire near the Colusa-Yolo county line, increasing containment to 60% as suppression efforts shifted toward extinguishing remaining hot spots and repairing fire lines.
As of Wednesday morning, the fire had burned 396 acres in Colusa County off Sand Creek Road, east of Rumsey Canyon.
Overnight, CAL FIRE used Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), equipped with thermal imaging technology to locate remaining hot spots across the burn area. The infrared mapping allows firefighters to identify areas of lingering heat that may not be visible from the ground, helping crews focus mop-up efforts where they are needed most.
Fire suppression repair work also began Wednesday as firefighters continued transitioning from active fire attack to rehabilitation of the affected area.
On Tuesday evening, crews completed control lines around the entire perimeter of the fire using a combination of hand-built and dozer lines. Firefighters also continued mopping up hot spots within the fire’s interior to strengthen those containment lines.
The Rumsey Fire was reported Monday afternoon off Sand Creek Road near the Colusa-Yolo county line. The cause remains under investigation.
No injuries or damaged structures have been reported.
