MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) – Adventist Health and Rideout has announced the winning name of its new Da Vinci 5 surgical robot following a community naming contest that drew nearly 1,800 votes.

The robot will be known as OSCAR, short for Operating Surgical Companion for Adventist Health and Rideout. Harmanjeet Kaur submitted the name, which voters selected through the public contest.

Hospital leaders said the effort aimed to involve residents in a milestone for the medical center.

“This was never just about naming a robot. It was about inviting our community into a milestone moment for the future of care in our region,” said Patience Boudreaux, president of the Adventist Health Rideout Foundation. “The response we received shows how deeply invested our community is in expanding access to advanced technology, high-quality care and a stronger future for our hospital.”

Community members, hospital associates and visitors met OSCAR during a public event held Thursday in the hospital’s main lobby.

The Da Vinci 5 system allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures using robotic-assisted technology. Hospital officials said the system supports smaller incisions, less pain and shorter recovery times for patients.

The surgical robot was funded through what foundation leaders described as the largest single philanthropic commitment in the history of the Adventist Health Rideout Foundation. Officials said the investment strengthens local access to advanced surgical care and supports physician recruitment and workforce development.

The hospital has expanded its focus on technology and clinical services in recent years, with leaders pointing to robotic-assisted surgery as part of that effort.
