Colusa 1 – Sutter 3 (8/25)

After falling to Sutter at home in their first game last week, the RedHawks rebounded nicely to steamroll Corning and Marysville.

 

Despite suffering the 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 setback to the Huskies, Colusa battled throughout.

 

Highlighting the affair was a 15-kill performance from junior Abby Coronado, who hit at .353 clip on the attack and additionally made 17 service receptions.

 

Peyton Miller had a productive all-around effort finishing with nine kills, 11 digs and 19 service receptions, while setters Cindel Oliver and Leyla Avera dished out 14 assists apiece.

 

In the back, row Cece Mitchum had 12 digs and 25 service receptions, while Marlie Berry pitched in with 10 digs.

 

On the road in Corning the following evening, the RedHawks cruised past Corning 25-15, 25-23, 25-13 again behind Coronado, who this time accounted for 13 points which included nine kills and four aces.

 

Miller and Mitchum each tallied six kills, while Avera and Oliver finished with 15 and nine assists respectively.

 

Berry had a team-high seven digs and 10 service receptions in the win.

 

Colusa proved an ungracious host in its final match, sweeping visiting Marysville, although no other information was provided.

 

This week the RedHawks (8-2) traveled to Yuba City on Tuesday to take on River Valley before making their way to Southern California for the Whittier Cardinal Classic that runs Sept. 5 and 6.

 

Pierce 3 – River Valley 2 (8/26)

Pierce 3 – Oroville 0 (8/28)

Sandwiching two wins around a loss last week, the Bears improved their record to 6-4 in the preseason.

 

In Yuba City to face River Valley, Pierce came back to win the final two sets and prevail 25-14, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12.

 

While pleased to come away with the victory, Coach Lauren Ornbaun felt her squad could have played better, but at the same time discovered what it needs to do to be successful.

 

“River Valley was better than last year, but this was a match we definitely should have won in three,” Ornbaun said. “We learned the importance of putting the first ball away. We were giving too many easy roll shots and finally started to swing away and place the ball better.”

 

Leah Charter had another monster performance ending the night with 16 kills and 35 digs, while Magali Jauregui did her fair share as well handing out 43 assists and making 28 digs.

 

Up front Rylie Delepierre played a major factor in the win as she hit .385, which included a team-high 17 kills in addition to making nine blocks.

 

Also turning in a solid all-around effort was Destany Martinez, who had 12 kills and 18 digs.

 

Leslye Velasquez spearheaded the defensive effort making 24 digs, while Alondra Barerra pitched in with 19 digs.

 

However, things didn’t go as well the following evening in Woodland where the Bears fell 15-25, 25-17, 13-25, 18-25 to the Wolves.

 

Again, the two seniors led the way with Charter garnering 17 kills and 18 digs and Jauregui dishing out 28 assists and making 17 digs.

 

Velasquez was busy in the back row accounting for 17 digs and 32 service receptions.

 

Pierce rounded out the week with a relatively easy 25-9, 25-20, 26-24 victory at home over the Tigers.

 

Delepierre put away 10 balls, Charter had nine kills to go along with 14 digs, while Velasquez made nine digs and 23 service receptions.

 

This week the Bears were in Clear Lake on Sept. 2, hosted Sutter on Sept. 3, traveled to face Vacaville Christian on Sept. 4 all ahead of ending the week at Sutter’s Battle in the Buttes Tournament.

 

 

Williams 0 – East Nicolaus 3 (8/26)

Williams 3 – Winters 0 (8/28)

After falling to a powerful East Nicolaus team by scores of 9-25, 17-25, 14-25 last Tuesday, the Yellowjackets closed out the week on a high note with a 25-23, 25-9, 25-18 road win over Winters.

 

Although no statistics from the match against the Spartans was available, Yurydia Rocha turned in a nice all-around effort against Winters which included seven kills and 16 digs.

 

Caitlyn Ruiz also showed her versatility logging five kills, 14 digs and 18 service receptions, while setter Arianna Paiz facilitated the offense handing out 16 assists.

 

Williams (3-2) began play at the Hamilton City Tournament on Thursday.

 

Maxwell 1 – Mt. Shasta 3 (8/26)

Maxwell 0 – Durham 3 (8/27)

Maxwell 3 – Paradise Adventist 1 (8/28)

The Panthers ended a two-game slide with a win over Paradise Adventist Academy last week.

 

Statistics from the three matches were not available by the Pioneer Review print deadline.

 

This week Maxwell (4-7) hosted Princeton on Tuesday in its only scheduled match of the week.

 

Princeton 1 – Biggs 3 (8/27)

The Eagles suffered a seventh straight loss to start the season as they fell 23-25, 25-18, 13-25, 25-21 at home to the Wolverines.

 

No other information about the match was provided by the Pioneer Review print deadline.

 

Looking to right the ship, Princeton traveled to Maxwell on Sept. 2, hosted Chester on Sept. 3 then begins play at the Hamilton City Tournament today.
