Despite struggling from the service stripe, the RedHawks had no trouble in their season opener posting a 25-16, 25-12, 25-15 victory against the visiting Cardinals.

Setters Cindel Oliver and Leyla Avera each handed out 10 assists, Abby Coronado led the attack with nine kills, while Cece Mitchum and Peyton Miller chipped in with five kills apiece.
Defensively, Marlie Berry made a team-high six digs.
Playing last Saturday in Yreka at the Miner Mountain Blast, Colusa bounced back from a pool play loss to West Valley to run the table and claim the championship with a win over the Eagles.
It was an effort that pleased Coach Kim Roper who said, “There was good competition and we got to see the girls play some really fun volleyball. Overall though we had a really strong performance in bracket play. The girls came in with high energy. They served tough, didn’t let balls drop and our setters ran a quick and effective offense which allowed the hitters to put tons of balls away.”
Miller was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Coronado and Mitchum earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
Now 6-1, the RedHawks were busy this week as they hosted Sutter on Monday, traveled to Corning on Tuesday before returning home to face Marysville on Thursday.
Maxwell 3 – Winters 2 (8/19)

Last week was a good one for the Panthers, who won two in a row but perhaps more importantly filled their coaching vacancy with a trio of veterans including Donna Vargas, Al Vargas and Danielle Wilson who took over the team as of last Friday.
Still in spite of all the change, Maxwell was able to edge Winters 25-14, 14-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-9 before sweeping PAA 25-13, 25-
16, 25-14.
Lylah Barrett had a nice all-around effort with nine kills, four blocks and 18 service receptions, while Erin Dennis finished with eight kills, four aces and eight digs.
Setters Bethany Wilson and Olivia Roa dished out seven and five assists respectively.
Statistics from the victory over PAA were not provided.
The Panthers capped off the week in Los Molinos at the Beth Pilger Tournament although no information was made available.
This week Maxwell entertained Mt. Shasta on Aug. 26, then hit the road to face Durham and Paradise Adventist on Aug. 27 and 28 respectively.

Playing U-Prep in a rematch of last years’ Northern Section CIF Division IV title game, the Bears fell at home 25-21, 16-25, 14-25, 19-25 in their first match last week, although they would ultimately bounce back to avenge that loss when they beat the Panthers at Chico High’s Panther Invitational.
Leah Charter had a monster performance in the first meeting with U-Prep accounting for 16 kills, 17 digs and 24 service receptions, while Magali Jauregui did her fair share as well finishing with 21 assists and 13 digs.
Also playing a big role was Leslye Velasquez, who made 16 digs and returned 26 service receptions.
Statistics from the Chico Tournament were not made available by the Pioneer Review print deadline.
Pierce was back at it this week having traveled to play River Valley on Tuesday and Woodland on Wednesday before it welcomed Oroville to Natalie Corona Gymnasium on Thursday.

After narrowly falling to Chester in its first game last week, Princeton ventured north to Los Molinos’s Beth Pilger Tournament, where they lost to Burney and Los Molinos although no other information was provided.
Against the Volcanoes, Reyna Sullivan led the attack with eight kills, Starlin Smith pitched in with four aces and made 14 service receptions.
Also, contributing to the Eagles’ back row effort was Gabby Trujillo with 13 digs and Jenna Silva with 10.
Princeton squared off against Biggs at home on Wednesday in its only scheduled match this week.

After falling in their season opener to Durham, a short-handed ‘Jacket team missing four of its starters faced the competition at the Beth Pilger Tournament in Los Molinos and still managed take home the silver bracket championship.

With just a seven-person rotation Williams gained momentum as the day progressed, taking a tight match 25-23, 21-25, 17-16 (third set called due to time) from Redding Christian before bouncing back from its earlier loss to Maxwell and defeating the Panthers 27-25 and 25-16.
Although no statistics were available, Lupita Zuniga received an All-Tournament nod.
Back at full strength and looking to build on their success, this week the Yellowjackets (3-2) took on a tough East Nicolaus squad at home on Tuesday before making the trip to face Winters on Thursday.
