COLUSA, CA (MPG) — A bat recently collected in Colusa County has tested positive for rabies, according to the Colusa County Department of Health and Human Services.
The bat was submitted for testing following a suspected exposure. Laboratory results confirmed the presence of the rabies virus.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is most often spread through the bite of an infected animal but can also be transmitted when saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with broken skin or mucous membranes. Without prompt medical treatment, rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
Colusa County Animal Control is urging pet owners to ensure their dogs, cats, and other domestic animals are up to date on rabies vaccinations. Residents are also advised to avoid contact with wild animals, including bats, skunks, and raccoons.
Suspicious or aggressive animals should be reported to Colusa County Animal Control at 530-458-0168. Officials also recommend sealing openings in homes where bats could enter attics or living spaces.
Health officials advise anyone bitten, scratched, or who has direct contact with an animal that could carry rabies to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and contact a healthcare provider immediately.
