COLUSA, CA (MPG) —The Colusa Parks, Recreation and Trees (PRT) Commission convened for its quarterly meeting in May, covering a range of topics from officer elections to updates on local parks, tree maintenance, and future projects.
The commission elected new officers for the year. Elizabeth Yerxa was named Chair, Jamie Davis Meyer as Vice Chair, and Leslie Poland as Secretary. All appointments were approved unanimously.
Commissioners provided brief reports on park issues. Will S. Green Park was noted to have a hole in the BBQ grill. At Levee Park, the commission discussed the need for better communication regarding changes, citing the recent flagpole installation. The drinking fountain at Sankey Park remains out of order, awaiting a replacement.
The commission received a report that the city’s tree pruning and stump grinding projects, funded by Measure B, have been completed. A full list of stumps removed was shared. No updates were available regarding plans for the Colusa State Park.
Commissioner Thomas Roach reported on tree planning practices in Woodland and recommended placing the discussion at a later meeting. Updates on the city’s pickleball and dog park projects were minimal; fencing for the dog park is expected soon.
Dennis Sanders, representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars, addressed the commission regarding Memorial Park. He shared the park’s history and outlined ongoing efforts by the Colusa Veterans nonprofit, which formed in 2019 following successful fundraising efforts. Sanders noted all memorial panels are currently full and additional panels are planned. Future projects include two lifelike bronze statues—a battlefield cross and a saluting veteran—pending fundraising. The group also requested to be notified of any future changes in the park and proposed that a patriotic mural be painted on the park’s storage container by the local arts council.
