Parents Rally to Save Catholic School from Closure

Colusa, CA (MPG) – A group of passionate and determined parents is fighting to save Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School (OLL), Colusa County’s only private, faith-based school, from permanently closing after 134 years of service to the community.

Founded in 1891, OLL has long been a place where academic excellence is nurtured alongside spiritual formation. Parents say the school is more than just a place of learning. It’s a faith-filled family where children are reminded daily that they are loved, valued, and created in the image of God.

Last week, the Diocese of Sacramento announced plans to close the school on June 30, 2025, citing low enrollment and budget challenges. While diocesan officials have described the decision as final, local families believe there is still a path forward if urgent action is taken.

To keep the school open, the parent group is working to enroll at least 15 more students, including re-enrollments, and is actively seeking financial pledges to demonstrate long-term support. They are also developing a strategic five-year sustainability plan and rallying broad community backing in hopes of persuading the Diocese to reconsider.

“This is a call to action,” said parent Alyssa Rolen. “With faith, unity, and commitment, we believe this school can continue to serve generations of children.”

As part of their efforts, parents are currently running a fireworks fundraiser at the Round Table Pizza parking lot in Colusa. They’re urging families interested in enrolling, or even just exploring the idea, to contact the school at 530-458-8208 or reach out to Rolen directly at 530-300-6769. Those interested in pledging financial support can contact Rolen or Krystal Cardona at 530-701-4738.

Parents stress that while the Diocese has suggested transferring students to Catholic schools in neighboring counties, these schools are over 45 minutes away, an unrealistic option for many working families and young children.

“We are praying for a miracle,” said Rolen. “And we believe our community can be the answer. If we come together now, we can keep this light burning for future generations.”
