Maxwell Boys Fall to Biggs

MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – Mid-Valley League opponents have proven to be a challenge for Maxwell this season and last Tuesday night was no exception as despite keeping it close in the first half, it saw visiting Biggs pull away to hand the Panthers a 31-61 loss.

Maxwell’s Noel Velazquez muscles his way to the basket as Biggs’ Skyler Long defends in a game played on Feb. 11.

Although initially it seemed as though Maxwell was going to make a game of it, a turnover with under a minute left before the half led to a Wolverine basket at the buzzer and changed the momentum of the contest for good.

As Biggs continued to press and push the pace in the second half, very little went right for the Panthers.

Noel Velazquez led Maxwell with nine points, while Tanner Vierra chipped in with seven points.

In their final regular season game on Feb. 13, the Panthers entertained first place Portola but couldn’t contain the Tiger’s one-two scoring punch of Connor Sheridan and Magnus Berg, who each average over 23 points per game and as a result fell 50-65.

No statistics from the game were provided.

Despite ending the season on a down note, the Panthers (8-11) received the No. 4 seed in the NSCIF Division VI playoffs and hosted No. 5 Etna on Feb. 20, with the winner moving on to face the winner between No. 1 Redding Christian and No. 8 Fall River in a game on Feb. 25.
