Whole New World

Daughter Velvet and I have been in New Orleans now for four days. The sights, sounds, smells and food are way different than what we are used to seeing and doing.

We’ve been total tourists and loved every minute of it. Lots of walking but thank God the old girl can still keep up.

The weather is calm but extremely humid. It’s bearable though. The food is great, but they do tend to fry a lot of things here. We have indulged in beignets. They are fried doughnuts dredged in mass quantities of powdered sugar.

We are learning a lot of Louisiana history. Some of it is lovely and some of it is a bit scary.

We did attend mass at St. Louis Cathedral. I totally enjoyed it. Beautiful church, music and message.

A highlight was a tour of the Oak Alley Plantation. The best part was our driver sounded just like Bobby Boucher in the movie the Waterboy. I loved it.

We explored the city via a trolly. We saw mansions and cemeteries. We got caught in a rainstorm. Most of the graves are above ground crypts. Apparently with underground burials the coffins are likely to float to the surface because of flooding here.

We cruised the Mississippi on a steamboat paddle wheel jazz cruise. A southern lunch was served. Tasty.

I’m feeling blessed to have this time with Velvet. Life is for sure good today.
