Students from Colusa High School’s Environmental Science Academy hosted a Science Day for fourth graders from Egling Middle School on Mar. 7.

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Juniors in Colusa High School’s Environmental Science Academy became teachers last Thursday morning when they hosted a Science Day for fourth grade students from Egling Middle School.

In 18 different stations high school students presented experiments covering topics that included surface tension, pressure, magnetism and even the science behind breathing as they not only tried to generate interest in science, but also to preview what Colusa High School has to offer as teacher Ben Haney explained.

“This event serves a couple purposes,” Haney said.  “First we want to show the fourth graders that the high school is an inviting place and that there are friendly faces here.  As for our students, it’s an opportunity to make the subject matter connect in another way.”

Colusa High School students Tristan Manor, Joshua Blackwell and Jason Waldron interact with Egling Middle School fourth graders at Science Day on Mar. 7.

As much as the fourth graders enjoyed the experience, so did the high schoolers according to juniors Ariana Avera and Danica Chavez.

“It was fun,” said Avera.  “I thought it was interesting what the kids had to say.  They came up with things I wasn’t thinking about.”

While for Chavez, the best thing was “seeing the reactions of the younger students.”

This was the second straight year that the ESA program has hosted Science Day.
