WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – Sacramento Valley League wrestlers converged on Williams High School last Saturday to compete in the league finals and a chance to advance to the Northern Section Championships.
Among the more than 90 varsity participants, in both the boys and girls divisions, were six local wrestlers who finished on the podium.
Pierce’s Anthony Reynolds-Villegas, Quin Stephens, and Nathan Gomez each finished second in their respective weight classes, while Williams’s Kamila Medina did the same in her division.
Taking home bronze were two Yellowjackets in Luis Martinez, Jr., and Leslie Pineda along with James Vernon and Pamela Vernon who represented the Bears.
Finishing just off the podium in fourth place was Pierce’s Easton Richins and Williams’ Salem Rodriguez.
In all, the event was a success due to the contributions of countless people as Williams head coach Nik Willis explained.
“Williams wrestling was excited to host the 2024 SVL Championships,” said Willis. “This event is a testament to the growth of the sport in Colusa County. Hosting any wrestling event is a community effort. I want to thank all of those who worked the event as well as those who contributed to the logistical details. Most of all though, I want to recognize the wrestlers who show up day-in and day-out for the most challenging sport there is.”
With the SVL season now in the books, the two teams had opportunities to advance to the CIF State Championships on Feb. 10.
The Yellowjackets made their way to East Nicolaus to compete in the Division III/IV finals, while the Bears headed north to Anderson for the Division II tournament.
