COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Colusa residents will see a jump in cost to their monthly garbage service next year, but not a painful an increase as last year.
Recology, which serves Butte and Colusa counties, notified the Colusa City Council of the increase in September, per the terms of the city’s franchise agreement with the refuse company.
The increase is based automatically on changes in the consumer price index and does not need City Council approval, Mayor Greg Ponciano said.
According to Recology, the rate adjustment formula consists of three components: the base rate, cost of fuel, and the cost of disposal.
The new rates will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
“The residential rate adjustment formula results in a 3.33% increase, which equates to a $1.58 increase per month for 96-gallon service,” said Recology General Manager Marci Walton, in a letter to the city. “Commercial rates are also increasing 3.33% above the current rates.”
According to Recology, the rate adjustment formula is based on a base increase of 2.8%, down from 6.8% last year, and disposal component increase of 3.36%, down from 4.9%, and an 8.39% fuel base rate, down from the 46.07% increase in 2022.
New rates will be $44.61 per month for regular 96-gallon residential garbage service, which is mandatory for all households.
Commercial rates for a 2 cubic yard bin, picked up one time per week, will increase to $133.78, up from $129.47 per month, effective Jan. 1.
Commercial rates range from 2 cubic yard bins to 8 cubic yards, which costs $535.16 to $2,675.68 for weekly pick-up.
