Volleyball Roundup (Oct. 20, 2023)

Maxwell’s Fatima Cano hits for a kill in the Panthers’ win over CORE Butte on Oct. 10.

Williams

The only county team to win both its matches last week, the Yellowjackets swept Los Molinos 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 before downing CORE Butte in a closer contest by scores of 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23.

At home against the Bulldogs, Gisele Navarro handed out 20 assists, while Mia Rivera led the attack with 11 kills, and Lupita Zuniga pitched in with six more.

Two nights later, the ‘Jackets found themselves down 3-10 to the Lynx in the fourth set but battled back and closed out the match after Ariana Paiz served two consecutive aces.

Rivera notched the 500th kill of her career as she finished the night with a game-high 21.

Navarro again did an admirable job facilitating the offense with 25 assists, while Estefany Carbeo contributed six kills, and Zuniga accounted for four aces.

Williams (12-17, 4-4) was in Hamilton City on Oct. 17, then returned home for its final regular season match against Biggs on Oct. 19.

Pierce

After registering a 25-12, 25-11, 25-21 win over Winters to start last week, the Bears, despite rallying from two sets down, could not hold off visiting Durham and fell 16-25, 24-26, 25-12, 25-19, 10-25.

On the road in Winters, Laura Rivera registered nine kills and Maggie Reyna added eight more to lead the attack, although 17 aces by the Bears helped the cause as well.

Magali Jauregui had a game-high nine aces, while Macey Myers served seven to go along with 10 digs and 15 service receptions.

Back home against the Trojans, the Bears got off to a slow start, dropping the first set then letting the second slip away, but came back strong in the third and fourth sets to push the match to a fifth.

While Pierce, at times, exhibited the talent they possess, miscues at critical junctures saw the match end in disappointment.

Despite the loss, Maicey Hoebel had a breakout performance in the middle, as the junior produced a season’s best nine kills and was able to slow down Durham’s leading hitter Payton Santos.

Pierce’s Magali Jauregui serves one of her game-high nine aces in the Bears loss to Durham on Oct. 12.

For the second straight game, Jauregui finished with nine aces from the service stripe then additionally dished out 23 assists.

As always, Myers was a warrior in the back row, making 27 digs and 31 receptions, while Gabby Sandoval chipped in with 10 digs and received 14 serves.

Sitting fifth in the Sacramento Valley League, the Bears (16-11, 6-6) closed out the regular season this week with a match in Colusa on Tuesday, before entertaining Live Oak on Thursday.

Maxwell

Following a relatively easy 25-23, 25-10, 25-12 victory over CORE Butte at home, the Panthers dropped into second place in the Mid-Valley League with a 4-25, 23-25, 25-16, 16-25 loss on the road in Hamilton City.

Against the Lynx, Fatima Cano led the attack with seven kills, while Emma Hendrix turned in a complete game performance with 12 assists, six kills, and four aces.

Defensively, Bailee Haywood made a team-high 12 digs.

It was a different story in the loss, however, as the Panthers struggled to put away kills against the scrappy Braves, who made 74 digs over the four sets.

Maxwell (23-3, 6-2) did not provide statistics.

This week, the Panthers were in Biggs on Tuesday and played their last regular season home match against Los Molinos on Thursday.

Colusa

Last week was a tough one for the RedHawks, who despite sitting atop the standings, going into their first match, found themselves in third at the conclusion of the week, after falling to Sacramento Valley League foes East Nicolaus and Willows.

In Trowbridge, the hometown Spartans exacted their revenge for the setback they suffered in Colusa on Sept. 14, by handing the RedHawks a 21-25, 12-25, 24-26 loss.

Against Willows, the RedHawks were able to take a set off the Honkers but could get no further.

No statistics from either match were available by the Pioneer Review print deadline.

Colusa (22-11, 9-3) looked to right the ship this week with a home match against Pierce on Tuesday, before making the trip to Durham on Thursday.
