WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – In the fourth and final meeting between the two squads this season, the Maxwell Panthers exacted their revenge on the Williams Yellowjackets for a loss on Sept. 19, as they swept the ‘Jackets 27-25, 25-21, 25-23 in a highly competitive Mid-Valley League match on Oct 5.
In the first set, Williams, despite having an eight-point lead saw the Panthers chip away to claim the win with a kill by Emma Hendrix on set point.
The second set featured a good battle at the net between Maxwell’s Hendrix and Fatima Cano against the ‘Jacket frontline that includes Mia Rivera, Lupita Zuniga and Caitlyn Ruiz.
Ultimately though, it was blocks by Hendrix and Cano that preserved the Panthers’ momentum and lifted them to the second set win.
In the third set, Williams was down early, but battled back to make it close, although the young ‘Jackets, which, at times, had three underclassmen on the court, could not overcome Maxwell’s experience.
Cano had a game-high 13 kills to go along with six blocks, while Hendrix handed out 15 assists, made six blocks, and hammered five kills to lead the Panthers.
Bailee Haywood made 10 digs in the back row.
For the Yellowjackets, Rivera put away nine kills, while Gisele Navarro dished out 19 assists and recorded five kills.
Earlier last week, both teams picked up MVL wins with Maxwell downing Los Molinos 25-5, 25-23, 25-19 and Williams sweeping Biggs 25-18, 25-11, 25-11.
This week, Maxwell (22-2, 5-1) had tough matches against CORE Butte and Hamilton City which will decide the MVL championship, while Williams (10-17, 2-4) looked to even its season series with Los Molinos and CORE Butte in two home matches.H
