Maxwell 24 – Modoc 44
ALTURAS, CA (MPG) – A rough first half in the rain against an improved Modoc squad ultimately did in the Panthers, as they fell to the Braves, a team they had previously shutout 38-0 back on Sept. 1.
Maxwell put its only points of the first half on the board in the second quarter, when Noel Velazquez scored on a one-yard keeper then carried that momentum into the third period to find the end zone three times.
Eddie Izquierdo scored from 20 yards out before Rudi Gonzalez added on with a 12-yard reception for a touchdown and another one on an eight-yard run, but it wasn’t enough to overtake an improved Modoc squad.
Following its second loss in as many games, Maxwell (3-3, 2-2) enters its bye week where it will prepare for its next Cascade Valley opponent, Etna, who comes to town on Oct. 13.
For his part, Heater rushed 13 times for 130 yards and a touchdown, then collected eight tackles on defense. Also helping the cause was Chris Roberson who made nine tackles.
Princeton (1-2) is back at it tonight when Herlong comes to town.
Princeton 20 – Herlong 52
PRINCETON, CA (MPG) – Coming off their win over Dunsmuir, the Eagles, despite a game effort, could not overcome injuries and as a result suffered a loss at the hands of the visiting Vikings.
Without senior standout Corwyn Roberson, who is hurt, Princeton turned to Brock Heater and Chris Roberson to carry the offensive load and the duo delivered, despite suffering injuries in the contest.
Heater went out in the second quarter but returned after intermission to finish the night with 10 carries for 172 yards and two touchdowns, while Chris Roberson rushed five times for 41 yards, brought back a kick 70 yards for a score and made 10 tackles before exiting the game.
Also stepping up for the defense was Chris Rendon with nine tackles.
The Eagles (1-3), who had just seven players on the field for a quarter of the game, hope to heal up quickly to make the trip to Happy Camp tonight. H
