After falling 13-25, 14-25, 19-25 in Willows to start last week, the Bears outlasted Williams 25-5, 25-21, 13-25, 18-25, 15-12, in a non-conference match, cruised past Winters 25-9, 25-5, 25-10, then tested the waters at the Carmichael Invitational Tournament.
Pierce couldn’t get much going on the attack against the Honkers, ending the match with just 14 total kills, although in the back row, Macey Myers finished with nine digs and 23 service receptions, while Gabby Sandoval and Hailey Regnani made 16 and 11 receptions, respectively.
Yet, the Bears bounced back the following evening in a thriller, where they survived a challenge from the scrappy Yellowjackets, behind Magali Jauregui’s 37 assists along with 12 kills from Maggie Reyna.
It was a win the team certainly needed, and one that should provide a confidence boost, given the way it overcame the adversity of losing a two-set lead to come away with the hard-fought victory.
Regnani tallied 10 kills, before leaving the match with an injury, and Maicey Hoebel pitched in with seven kills.
Myers was once again a major presence for the defense recording 27 digs and 19 service receptions.
Sandoval, who continues to improve as the season progresses, made 16 digs and 12 receptions.
Against the Warriors, Pierce didn’t encounter much resistance, but were led by Laura Rivera with 10 kills.
Jamie Figueroa dished out 16 assists with Jauregui accounting for 12 more.
Myers pitched in with 10 digs, in addition to serving eight of the Bears’ 19 aces.
At the CIVT, Pierce beat Rosemont 10-25, 25-19 but fell to River City, although no other information was available.
This week the Bears (9-7, 2-2) were in Durham on Sept. 19 and hosted Colusa on Sept. 21 in a pair of Sacramento Valley League matches.H
